Mid-side mix bus
Rychlá odpověď
Use mid-side processing on the mix bus sparingly: keep low frequencies mostly in mid (center), tame muddy sides, and add gentle high-side air only after the mid balance is solid. Always A/B in mono and watch correlation so width does not erase the mix.
What Mid-Side Means on a Bus
Mid is the correlated center information (much of kick, snare, bass, lead vocal). Side is the difference information that creates width (rooms, pans, stereo FX). Mid-side EQ lets you treat those components separately on the stereo bus.
It is a finishing tool, not a substitute for arranging width on tracks. Mono compatibility still rules — mono guide.
Safe Master-Bus M/S Moves
- Stabilize the mid first
If the mid is dull or harsh, fix tracks before exotic side boosts. - High-pass or low-shelf sides carefully
Reduce low-frequency side energy that causes mono flab. - Cut muddy side mids
200–500 Hz side clutter often cleans the stage. - Tiny high-side air optional
Wide sparkle after de-essing harsh cymbals on tracks. - Mono fold A/B
If the hook dies, undo side boosts. - Correlation / vectorscope glance
Hard negative trends need investigation.
When Not to Touch M/S on the Bus
- Broken vocal/kick balance Fix tracks; M/S will not rescue masking.
- Already mono-incompatible layers Repair wideners upstream.
- Heavy limiting already on Width tricks after a smashed limiter are harder to judge — see mix bus processing.
- Matching a reference by ear alone while louder Level-match references first.
Problem → M/S Idea
| Symptom | Try | Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wide but weak center | Reduce side lows; focus mid punch | Mono fold |
| Harsh cymbals wide | Cut high sides slightly | Phones + mono |
| Vocal lost in sides | Ensure vocal energy in mid | Mute sides briefly |
| Boom only in headphones | Mono low sides | Club-like mono sum |
Common Mistakes
- Huge side boosts as “pro width” Phasey, mono-fragile masters.
- Stereoizing the sub on the bus Bass disappears in mono.
- Never bypassing Loudness bias from any added air.
- Using M/S instead of arrangement Width belongs on parts first.

Často kladené otázky
- Should I use mid-side EQ on every master bus?
- No. Use it when a specific center vs width problem remains after track work. Many mixes need zero bus M/S.
- Can mid-side fix a mono-incompatible mix?
- It can reduce side problems but will not restore fundamentals that cancel. Fix wideners and polarity upstream.
- Where should bass live in mid-side?
- Fundamentals almost always in mid/center. Keep sides thin below the low mids.
- Is mid-side the same as stereo widening?
- Related but not identical. Widening increases side energy; M/S EQ can boost or cut mid and side bands independently.
- Do streaming platforms break mid-side tricks?
- Codecs and mono playback paths expose weak M/S choices. Always mono-check and leave true-peak headroom.
- Mid-side before or after bus compression?
- Both exist in pro chains. Pick one order, level-match bypass, and keep moves small so the compressor does not fight width swings.
